Chapter Twenty-Six

“Summon common bed.” My twin-sized bed appeared in front of us, a little torn up from the battle with Mary’s spiders, but was still in passable condition.

The wolves stopped only for a moment, which allowed me to summon Tosser.

The crazy little bastard burst out from my bag and, after catching one look at the wolves, he retreated behind Rain, using her as a shield.

The monkey wouldn’t be the best bait, but just his appearance threw the wolves off enough for me to catch them by surprise. I ran forward and planted a foot in the center of the bed as I launched myself toward the wolves.

They bared their teeth and rushed forward. They lunged, narrowly missing me. I swung my sword down and caught the closest wolf in the neck. My blade sliced down to the bone, and a sickening crack filled the air. A second later, the wolf collapsed into a heap on the ground.

I stepped back onto the bed as the other wolves jumped toward me. I was a second too slow and caught one of the wolves’ fangs in my arm. It was just enough to allow the wolf to gain purchase and clamp down. A flash of searing pain rushed through my body as the wolf used its incredible strength to pull me down off the bed.

I brought my sword forward with my free arm and landed three strikes on its back, finally freeing my now bloody arm from its clenched jaws.

Sy dropped from the sky and lit brightly, disorienting the two closest wolves. While they tried to regain their bearings, I finished them with ease.

I turned just as Rain released a charged water spell into an attacking wolf. The wolf yelped, but continued to push forward. Her water spells were definitely not as strong against these foes. It didn’t help that there wasn’t any water to be found around us she could easily pull from.

She removed her bow and immediately nocked an arrow. The arrow zipped past me and hit true, dead center in the middle of the attacking wolf’s eyes.

I reached the kitsune a second later and gave her a smile. “I thought you said you sucked with a bow.”

“Lucky shot.”

I turned back and four more wolves appeared. “Get out of here! Go on!”

The wolves didn’t react like some of the dogs I’d come across before. They were hungry. Smooth yellowed fangs bared, their eyes never wavered as they approached. In my experience with canines, if you showed any sort of fear, it would only make them bolder.

Rain nocked another arrow and released it. This time, the arrow sailed several feet above the approaching wolves.

I stepped in front of the woman, protecting her as she readied another arrow. I landed several strikes in succession, killing two of the wolves, and the third lunged for my injured arm.

The beast’s jaw wrapped around my arm, but its jaws stopped as if held up by some unseen force. I stepped back from the wolf and it shook its head wildly.
